Corona Discharge Onset Delay Caused by the Lack of Seed Electrons

Abstract

The issues of seed electrons sources are considered. The lack of seed electrons causes the delay of corona ignition by the direct or the alternating voltage. The air gap in the point-plane electrodes system is considered, current oscilograms by direct voltage switching are presented. Experimental investigation results reveal that the corona ignition delay duration is up to 30 s at the gap length of 14 mm. Dependencies of the ignition delay on voltage and probability density function for the ignition delay by a particular voltage are presented. Seed electrons concentration is estimated, the ignition delay duration is computed by the finite element method on the base of the equation set describing the charged particles motion in the electric field in the drift-diffusion approximation.
