The phenomenon of the dispersion the drops, hanging on the upper electrode lying on the bottom one, is experimentally investigated as, resulting from the instabi-lity of their equilibrium in an electric field. The existence of two modes of instability of hanging drops is established: drop-shaped and cone one. In case of a drop mode at the moment of approach of instability, a smaller drop comes off the basic drop; in a case of a cone mode. On the drop end a Taylor cone is formed accompanied either by small drops, or trickles, or a spark breakdown. In case of lying drops, always the cone mode is realized. Semi-empirical estimations are given that are in good agreement with experimental results.
