The fifty-year history of the Institute of Applied Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova is outlined starting from its inception, formation of the first basic laboratories, material and technical resources, pilot production, establishing the journal “Elektronnaya obrabotka materialov (“Surface Engineering and Applied Electrochemistry”), and further to the development of its reputable professional scientific and engineering human resources, organization of conferences and scientific forums, involvement in broad scientific cooperation, participation in national and international grant programs and projects. The history of the Institute of Applied Physics embraces the fundamental and applied results, training of high-quality researches, establishing of famous scientific schools, editing of the highly indexed international journal, monographs and thematical collected works, publications in various prestigious journals, international cooperation, organization of numerous scientific forums. The strategy of research and development works with a closed cycle from fundamental to applied research has resulted in the advanced technologies and technical means for their practical implementation. The main aspects of the optimization of the structure, updating of the research directions, development of the innovation activity, broadening of the international cooperation, issues of publishing and patent protection are described.
